Grade 2 · Operations & Algebraic Thinking
This is the fluency finish line for the 20-range: by the end of Grade 2, students should add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and by year's end know every sum of two one-digit numbers from memory — no counting, no ten-frame, no fingers. The numbers are the same as 1.OA.C.6; what changes is the expectation of speed and automaticity.
Directly follows 1.OA.C.6, where strategies like counting on and making ten are first taught. This fluency is a prerequisite for 2.NBT.B.5 (adding and subtracting within 100), since regrouping steps depend on instant single-digit recall.
Numbers are locked to this standard's range (within 20). Use a higher problem count for a timed fluency check.
