What 3.NBT.A.2 Covers

By Grade 3, students are expected to add and subtract within 1,000 fluently — accurately, efficiently, and using a strategy or algorithm of their choice (place value, properties of operations, or the addition/subtraction relationship), without needing drawings or manipulatives. The number range itself is the same as Grade 2's 2.NBT.B.7; what changes is the expectation of speed and independence.

Where It Fits

Directly follows 2.NBT.B.7, where students first learned why regrouping works with models and drawings. Fluency here also underpins 3.OA.C.7's multiplication/division fact work and every multi-step word problem later in Grade 3 that mixes operations.
