What 4.NBT.B.4 Covers

By Grade 4, the number range grows well past the 3-digit work of 3.NBT.A.2: students are expected to add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently, using the standard algorithm specifically (rather than any strategy of their choice). Grade-level expectations keep numbers up to about 1,000,000 so that sums and differences stay within that range, while the operation itself carries the same regrouping logic students first practiced with smaller numbers.

Where It Fits

Builds directly on 3.NBT.A.2's within-1,000 fluency, extending the same standard algorithm to 5- and 6-digit numbers. This standard is a prerequisite for Grade 4's multi-digit multiplication and division work, and for any multi-step word problem that mixes large-number addition or subtraction with other operations.

Common Mistakes

Numbers are locked to this standard's multi-digit range (up to 500,000 per addend, so sums stay within 1,000,000) so every problem matches 4.NBT.B.4 exactly. Use the standard algorithm — line up place values, then add or subtract column by column.
