What K.OA.A.5 Covers

By the end of Kindergarten, students should answer addition and subtraction facts where every number involved — both parts and the total — is 5 or less (things like 2 + 3, 5 − 1, 4 − 4) without counting on fingers or objects. The goal is instant recall, not just a correct answer eventually.

Where It Fits

Builds on the earlier Kindergarten standards where students first act out addition as "putting together" and subtraction as "taking apart" using objects and drawings. Once facts within 5 are automatic, students move on to 1.OA.C.6, where the same fluency goal expands to numbers within 20.
